Pip-Life Poetry

Nothing To See Here. Just A Poem About Birds. A Forthcoming Book. And A Surprise Memoir.

May 15, 2020

I know. So many POEMS. I am just really loving trying to write poems! #SorryNotSorry

ALSO? I am also writing a BRAND NEW BOOK! I have been commissioned by Murdoch Books to write a book about looking after your precious self when you are a mum. It’s coming out in April 2021!

AND? Just between us … I am 40, 000 words into a memoir about trying to be a human in this strange world … and how being in nature and noticing small things can help. I accidentally started it 4 weeks ago and it’s pouring out.

It’s fair to say that not having a day job has led to a bit of a creative explosion!

Below is today’s poem … it’s about the park I like to visit and the cormorants that visit it too (and also about deadly fungi!)

You don’t have to like it! I am just a learner! (But I like it! I am getting better at poems!)

I see
the slick darkness
that slips into
this green-trimmed cloak
shot through
with fins and frog legs
all arcing
a rippled goodbye
gleam and shake
like waves
dipping below
the watery half light
for far too long
the faraway canopy
death caps
with dew drops
these unearthed treasures
the pearly presents
nobody expected.

I love your poem! I particularly like the bit in the middle where you’re moving from talking about the cormorants to the death caps, and it’s not clear which one you’re talking about – beautiful blurring imagery. Please keep sharing your poems.
And I can’t wait to read your new books – squeeeeee!!
