Newsy Snacks For Busy People…

I used to write a column for another website called Newsy Snacks For Busy People. It was fun to write and fun to read… I thought I’d write a pared-down version of Newsy Snacks for you. Just to welcome your week in. Here goes!

Newsy

Caroll Spinney (cover your eyes children) the person who lurks beneath Big Bird is not only 81 and has been Big Birding for 40 years… he’s also a man. Gee. Growing up I thought Big Bird had a lady in him but I was totally wrong. There’s a new documentary about Big Bird coming out and you can meet Caroll in the flesh via that. Sort of.  More on that here.

I found out that ultra-violet radiation and high winds can make stars. From clouds. Or something like that. This beautiful image is of the southern constellation Ara and it’s 4000 light years from us.  This is the best image ever captured of this constellation. More on that here.

Does a loving family create social inequality? Interesting! ‘One way philosophers might think about solving the social justice problem would be by simply abolishing the family. If the family is this source of unfairness in society then it looks plausible to think that if we abolished the family there would be a more level playing field’ says philosopher Adam Swift. All the more reason to get all village-y again… Read on here.

The American Humane Association marks 100 years of ‘Be Kind To Animals Week’. The association was started as a reaction/protest against the huge number of horses lost to battle in WW1.  More here and here.

A new series shines a light on life in Sydney’s Mount Druitt. It’s called Struggle Street and it begins on Wednesday night on SBS. More here. I’m going to watch it on catch up. Hopefully better awareness of what people are enduring will result in better support.

What happens when kids skip a grade at school? The good, the bad or the ugly? More here. I skipped two grades. It explains SO MUCH, doesn’t it?!

Rookie published a great piece called ‘How to talk to your parents about transitioning’. Read and learn a bunch of good stuff here.

I hope that was fun to read! So much darkness about, I thought I’d help you out with some other bits and bobs (sans click bait and sensationalist snippets!) If you have any good/interesting newsy links then pop them in the comments for us to read? Good on you!

I’ve got Woodruff growing in my front garden, wish I could send you some to make punch, lovely ground cover, fine white flowers are blooming now, with a sweet smell, they came from my mothers garden.
