:: Map Making…

May 31, 2011

my map :: above :: at our book shoot back in March

You might know that I have been embroidering this map for what seems like an age… You might not know that, too. I don’t mind. I started making my map back in January and it’s hanging on the wall of the shop waiting for me to get around to finishing it. I think it’s a bit of an ode to the work in progress… I like it to hang unfinished, because I think that we all have stuff tucked away in various stages of completion. I think it’s good to get the WIPs out of the closet. I will get there one day… and I am sure that you will get your things done too.

NOW. Here is another really super great Map Project (below). How great is it?! It might be a bit quicker than my embroidered idea. It might even be cuter. Yep. I think it would be fabulous on a large scale, hanging on the living room wall. What do you think? You can find the full how-to at Crate DIY. Excellent, methinks!

xx Pip

    I love, love, love your embroidered map. It's of the the most favorite pieces of embroidery I have ever seen. 🙂

    What a great make – I love this, though I'm not sure a county map of the UK would be quite as cute!

    nice! I respect your project, but my immediate crafting gratification-type of personality would go for option #2. Less time consuming and it is lovely!

    I love your embroidered map! I saw some notebooks at a market recently that had been covered in old maps and they looked pretty cool – there's something really satisfying about maps somehow isn't there?

    Hi Pip,

    I think you might like the work of the artist Jessica Rankin if you haven't seen it before, she uses embroidery to create her 'maps of the imagination'. http://www.whitecube.com/artists/jessica_rankin/

    Also, there is a great variety of different arty map works in this book which I love for inspiration: http://amzn.to/kKPXHP

    Now, that's a fun way to get kids to learn their states.

    I love maps and I think your map is ace, finished or unfinished. I especially like the colours you've chosen.

    I have two lots of WIP – one basket-full that has been neatly filled away somewhere and one pile of bits and bobs that sits on my desk. The projects in the basket haven't seen the light of day for a good 6 months, whereas the projects on my desk gradually, eventually, one day, get finished. So I am all in favour of leaving WIP out, so they can be seen and enjoyed and (eventually) finished!
