Lesson Twenty-Six: When You Don’t Know What To Write

Maybe you find yourself in a position where you just don’t know what to blog about?

When you don’t know what to write, the best idea is to just START SOMEWHERE. Start anywhere. Perhaps it’s a idea you have brainstormed, a sliver of conversation, something you read, a colour you love. The most important thing with any writing is to just show up and and get going.

There’s a bit of a misconception that you should have the whole story, fully-formed, floating around your head.  Some people think that the writing part is merely the act of transcribing something that’s already developed. The good news is that that’s not the case. More often than not, you start with a little spark of an idea, unsure of its potential or what will happen next. It’s only by sitting down and tapping something out on the keyboard that the idea comes to life and shows itself properly.

The whole point of writing is that YOU are along for the ride as along with your readers. The writing is an adventure for you, as much as for them, challenging yourself to create something from a mere sliver and surprising yourself as the words pour (or slowly flow!) out in their very own way.

When you don’t know what to write, know that there is SO MUCH IN YOU that is ready to tap its way out. Just choose that sliver, that spark to get you going and see what happens. It doesn’t have to be a big thing. Just choose something.

Often the thing that you then write might be a side-step from your original spark, but that’s okay. You just need to do a bit of tightening and editing once you’ve got your initial words down to re-clarify the structure and intent. Then you’re good to go. Cool.

If you don’t know what to write, you are in the exact same position as many other bloggers and awesome writers who’ve gone before you. (How professional and creative of you!) I’m betting their advice to you would be just the same as mine: just start writing.

Go!
