Lesson Three: Who Is Your Favourite Reader

I’m a big believer in the idea of writing to ONE PERSON when you write your blog. I have written about this lots of times, and basically I think it’s great to imagine your very favourite kind of reader and write as though you are writing only for them.

The good thing about doing this is that you will naturally write in your own ‘voice’, you’ll write in a conversational style and you’ll write the things you most want to because you’re not trying to be all things to all people.

In today’s lesson, we’re going to work out who that favourite reader is. We’re going to develop a ‘Favourite Reader Profile’, making a little bit of a dossier on just who that ‘person’ (and it may well be an actual person!) is and what they think, feel, like.

Create your Favourite Reader Profile

Is it a particular person?
Or an ace imaginary friend?
What do they like to do?
Are they male or female?
How old are they?
What things do they read?
What films would they like?
How about music?
Do they have any hobbies?
What books do they like?

What’s their secret snack fixation?
What do they watch on telly or stream online?
What other blogs or online publications would they read?
What kind of house would they live in?
Who with?
Are they tech savvy or not?
Where do they hang out?
Where would they go on holidays?
What issues do they care about?

Add your own ideas too, building up a more tangible vision of just who is on the other end of the screen when you hit publish. Yes, a lot of this stuff is fictional, but it’s really important to stay in touch with the fact that you are writing to readers, real people who are gobbling up all the good stuff you are doing and eager for more.

I’ve always liked the idea of making a little collage of my favorite reader – what she looks like and all the answers to the questions you listed. Bit creepy?
