Cough. Splutter. I’m Back At Last!

April 28, 2018

Oh man. I had been going so well with the juggling blogging and work and life. And then I got sick. At first I thought it was a cold. Then I realised it was the flu. Then the flu levelled-up with a sinus infection. Finally I added bronchitis to the mix, because I really am the sort of person who likes to do things properly. For three whole weeks. Sigh.

Anyway, I am finally on the mend and not crawling into bed sobbing about my own unhealthy misfortune each night any more. Nope. I am actually sitting up and reading and making things and watching stuff, all the while noticing that every day I feel a bit better than the last. But only a bit. I am not sure why it’s taking so long, but I suppose it’s the whole thing about being an asthmatic and having had pneumonia a few times … and pleurisy. And now basically being a Certified Slow Recoverer.

But that is boring. I only told you so you knew I was not blogging because of physical hurdles, rather than some sort of demotivated or lacklustre reasons. So now you know.

While I have been sick, I have still had to work because that is the life I have a the moment. But I still have found some time to do non-work things that you might want to do too. (Okay, not the coughing or the feeling sorry for oneself. More the reading and the watching and the making.)

I’ve been reading a really brilliant book about naturalist Edith Coleman. The book is called The Wasp and the Orchid and it’s by Danielle Clode. I am trying to read it slowly, as it’s detail-packed and it’s also the sort of book that transports you to a different era. That is my preferred thing at the moment, when the current era is proving a leeeeeetle bit challenging (thank you very much Kanye, Trump, Grant from Bachelor in Paradise and others you know who you are omg.)

I am mostly going mad for stories, to be honest. I downloaded Heartburn on Audible (it’s read by Meryl Streep) – on the recommendation of The High Low (my favourite podcast) and I don’t know why I haven’t read it before. It’s so funny and great and sad. I like it so much that I am going to buy a hard copy because I just NEED to have a proper copy of every book I love, even if it means that Meryl Streep is not reading it.

I made this Mac n Cheese for Ari and he liked it a lot

I’ve been watching the Duchess of Duke Street – something I remember my Nan and Mum mentioning and loving, when I was a wee gal. It’s also brilliant. (Brilliant is my new favourite word, as you can see.) I’m watching it on Amazon Video, which you can now sign up for from Australia, although they limit the content we can see due to licensing etc. (It seems a bit glitchy when you sign up from the Australian Amazon site, so do it from the US one – and you can use your AU credit card and address.) There are also lots of sneaky episodes on YouTube, if you’re keen to watch.

I’ve been telling the story of my broken internet (another reason for the slow blogging) to customer service people in South Africa. That hasn’t been brilliant, but I think we have almost resolved it after 10 days of patchy or zero connection.

I’ve been making up a story about the dad eagle, who has disappeared from the nest I’ve been watching so intently. Thousands of others have been watching too, and they’re celebrating the mum eagle’s resolve to go on, as they mourn the loss of dad eagle and watch the eagle-couple’s babies grow.

I have been watching Claws on Stan – a sort of Orange is the New Black-esque dramedy set in a nail salon. It’s a rollicking and fun ride.

And I’ve been making things. Finishing a blanket for my niece. Starting another surprise blanket. Pondering a quilt I want to make. Making headphone cosies for Frankie Magazine’s latest issue (okay, I did that a while ago, but I wanted to mention it as the new issue is out and they are in it!) I also finished my giant granny square blanket – called the Snuggletown Blanket – too. I guess that’s actually a lot!

I have NOT been cooking very many things, because honestly I haven’t really felt like eating much. This is obviously a crying shame because food is The Best. Mostly I’ve been drinking clear teas like ginger and genmai cha and sipping soup. Here’s hoping I like food more very, very soon – and am fully mended even sooner!

Much love to you, if you have read this far. I will be back again MUCH sooner than the last time!

Your pal,

Pip

PS: Cough, splutter, sniff

PPS: A new little Prince Louis! Hurrah!

Oh, Pip, I’m so glad you’re on the mend – finally! Be kind to yourself so you can be back to tip top really soon.
Thanks for the podcast tip; I’m listening right now. xxx

Mac and Cheese! The best… Love your headphone warmers! Very handy dandy! We went to the comedy fest (from Bgo) and got rained on. It has been a real hot and cold Autunn-not hard to get sicky. Glad you are feeling better 🙂

I’m sorry to hear you’ve been sick, I hope you are soon tickety boo again. I’ve missed you and your colourful cheeriness.
    Cheers Kate.

I just bought Heartburn too! And your 5th book. And The Little Prince. And Dying: A Memoir. And A Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy. Winter is coming, hence the need for books! I just watch Fantastic Mr Fox and liked it a like, while still slowly hooking and looping my neon disco lights blanket. Rest up pip, and I hope you’re 100% in no time. Lauren.
