Gilmore Girls Listen/Watch/Read

:: Gilmorealong : Season One Pilot

January 15, 2015

I can’t help it. Something in me is so addicted to Gilmore girls. I know it’s not perfect. I know there are flaws, but there’s also an innocence, a cheekiness, a cheerfulness which suits my temperament down to the ground.

If you’ve been following my late-blooming obsession with this show, you won’t be surprised that I’m re-watching a 3rd time. I’m also documenting my third watch. I’m talking spreadsheets people, spreadsheets! I thought we could do  a fun thing and watch an episode each week together. And I’m going to do a little rundown of some of the fun details AND I’m going to make up some cute Gilmore games, too. (That’s a thing!) I’m calling it a #gilmorealong!

SO, if you’d like to watch along, then just join in! I can’t promise I will TOTALLY keep on top of this, but I’m going to try hard. I think it will be fun to chat about each episode in the comments each week!

If you are not sure how to watch Gilmore girls you can find it on iTunes, buy the DVD or see it on Netflix (if you are that way inclined!)

Gilmore Along : Season One Pilot

While you watch : Play A Gilmore Game

You can play Gilmore Bingo. Just keep your ear out for the bingo words as you watch! Do it with friends (you can print it or just hand write your own bingo cards!) Maybe you could have a prize? If it’s just you, buy yourself something nice when you win!

After you watch: Things I noted/liked

Because it’s the pilot, some bits of this episode are a bit whack. Luke’s Diner, for instance looks a bit different and is situated differently. The exterior of Emily and Richard Gilmore’s house doesn’t match the rest of the show’s eps.

Also, Rory and Lorelai’s relationship is a bit more angsty than usual in this early ep. It’s a bit out of character! (Same with Luke and Lorelai!)

Lorelai totes vanilla, chocolate, strawberry and toasted marshmallow lip gloss. She also has a lip gloss that can detect your mood. Fancy.

Sookie knows the correct balance of maple syrup to peach sauce.

Dean has been watching Rory. But not in a creepy way. (I think it’s a bit creepy, personally).

Cup of coffee count
Unknown. (Tell me if you count?!)

Gilmore looks
Rory wore a very large jumper.
Rory wore a very large kilt.
Luke wore his baseball cap backwards.
Lorelai wore a very tight beanie.
Lane wore a confusing tie-dyed t-shirt.
Dean wore cargo pants, a leather jacket and a bad haircut.
Miss Patty wore chunk gold accessories, a cigarette holder and  a cane.

Foodie mentions in this episode
Coffee : Lorelai and Rory (many, many times!)
Burgers and Fries : Lorelai and Rory (default dinner)
Chilli Fries : Rory (I don’t know what they are, but they sound amazing!)
Muffins : Mrs Kim and Lane (sugar-free, dairy free, wheat free!)
Duck : Sookie (at Lorelai’s house)
Pate : Sookie (at Lorelai’s house)
Peach Sauce : Sookie (at the Independence Inn)
Lamb : Richard and Emily Gilmore (Friday Night Dinner!)
Champagne : Richard and Emily Gilmore (Rory got into Chilton!)
Cake : Rory and Dean (in case you like round things)
Pie : Lorelai (because… pie!)

Books mentions
Moby Dick by Herman Melville
Madame Bovary by Gustave Flaubert
The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn
The Little Match Girl by Hans Christian Anderson
The Second Sex by Simone De Beauvoir
On The Road by Jack Kerouac
Mistress of Mellyn by Victoria Holt
(thanks to the Gilmore girls wiki and my own amazing powers of observation!)

Gilmore tunes
I’m making a Gilmore girls playlist here -> Gilmore girls
I’m going to add to it as we go through each episode. At the moment there is all the music (I think!) from this Pilot episode.
(You can skip ahead to this Gilmore Girls- Complete Soundtrack playlist, if you like! I’m keen to make my own and enjoy the gradual compile, though!)

Things they are watching or talking about watching
Rosemary’s Baby
Mommie Dearest
Westside Story

A few fave lines

Lane: I’m hayriding with a future proctologist. I have potential.

Mrs Kim: (very seriously) Boys don’t like funny girls.

Lane: OK, there’s academic-minded and then there’s Amish.

Lorelai: Sookie, there are several chapters from a Stephen King novel I’d reenact before I’d resort to that option.

Sookie: So where’s your paté?
Lorelai: At Zsa Zsa Gabor’s house.

Luke: Coffee…fries. I can’t stand it. This is so unhealthy. Rory, put down that coffee. You do not want to grow up to be like your mom.
Rory: Sorry, too late.

Let me know if you’re going to watch with this gang! (Hopefully we can form a gang!)  Tag your posts on Insta or Twitter with #gilmorealong so we can find each other. Think Gilmore bingo, Gilmore screening evidence, Gilmore snacks… stuff like that.

Let’s chat below about the Pilot ep! Go nuts, Gilmore-style! I’d love your take on it (WE would all love it, right?!) whether you are watching for the first time or re-watching like me!

I know I’m a bit late on dropping in on this chat, but really, GG is my fav of all time…
When it was on TV, my daughter and I would be in bed eating chocolate and watching, it bound us together like nothing else…

Also agree with Sarah, Men in trees, was awesome…..think it’s the whole small town thing ??????

Ohh I use to love watching Gilly girls when it was first on TV, pretty sure my hubby use to watch it to! I must add it to my list of DVDs to buy!

    I’m thinking you’re a kindred spirit!!

I am totally in. Watched ep 1-3 yesterday thanks to my local library. It’s sooo good and sooo bad all at once. I was hooked when it was on TV originally but never watched the complete series. Thanks for the insperation. I’m in!!

I’ve just started watching GG for the first time! A lot of my friends love it so I decided to start at the beginning. x

Can’t say I have ever noticed any flaws in GG – to me it is sheer perfection. I really hope to join in with the #gilmorealong.

    PS – I always thought Dean was a bit of a creep…

I haven’t watched GG as yet, but will definitely be looking for it at the library.

Another series I really, really loved (and watch endless re-runs of, every time it’s on TV) is Men in Trees. I keep looking for it on DVD but, so far, no luck. That series makes me want to move to Alaska and rent a cabin in the woods (just like Marin’s).

I haven’t really counted but I think I’ve watched the whole series through close to 7 times. I watched it when it was airing, then again when they started replaying on foxtel and now I own and watch it in random order at least a couple of eps a month! This is great excuse to do a whole re-watch again. Thanks Pip

Pip not only am I watching the Gilmore Girls I am also crocheting your age before beauty blanket. This is my current morning ritual before the rest of the house wakes up! Thanks for reminding me how great this series is : )

    • Reply Nicole November 23, 2016 at 3:02 AM

Hey Sarah what’s an age before beauty blanket and if you have finished it as your post was from last year can you post a pic please?

  • Reply Camille January 16, 2015 at 4:45 AM

Love this idea! I totally understand your obsession, because I myself have been obsessed with GG for years! I’ve watched through all the seasons a lot (have them on DVD), especially the early seasons, they are my favorites. I like to pop in a favorite episode when I’m feeling blue or can’t sleep at night, and it always makes me feel better. I’ve probably been watching the show regularly since the 3rd season was on, and I never get sick of it (just ask my hubs, he’s always like, really? Gilmore Girls again?) haha 🙂

Spooky! I watched the pilot episode just last night! Will try to keep up!

  • Reply Ali January 15, 2015 at 10:08 PM

I am so glad that you love Gilmore Girls. Its my favourite show. I watch it the entire way through and when I get to the end I start back up again. Its that good and there is just no other show like it out there! Right now I am on the episode in season 6 where Paris is running the Yale daily news with disastrous results.

I am so in love with this idea! I could chat about GG all day. I’ve recently just started watching the whole series again for the 7 millionth time, inspired by your posts actually.

The pilot is fresh in my mind….. I’m so with you on creepy Dean! His hair is terrible, his whole person is just a little heeby geeby. But I think I might be biased based on dumb things I’ve heard the actor who plays his character say in the media.

The different layout of Luke’s and Emily’s house was really bothering me watching the episode! I kept trying to flip it back to the normal layouts in my mind while watching. Haha.

I also noted the more angsty-ness with Lorelai/Rory and Lorelai/Luke.

I’ve also decided that I love Sookie and Michele more and more each time I watch. And I dislike Emily more and more each time I watch.

Thank you SO much for bringing this fab show to my attention Pip! I am recovering from surgery and have done nothing but lie in bed and watch GGs. I’m halfway through season 5 and I am so in love with Stars Hollow and the GG characters. I can’t wait to finish and start all over again 🙂

  • Reply Reannon @shewhorambles January 15, 2015 at 5:39 PM

My BFF & I were OBSESSED with GG when it was first on TV. We’d watch then call each other & chat & talk about how we want to live in Stars Hollow & how great Lorelie’s dress & coats were….Good times. Then channel 7 went & stuffed up & stopped showing it so I started ordering the series from America because we couldn’t stop watching. When we got to the final Ep we cried so much. We didn’t want it to end! Damn its a good show!

Chilli fries is fries with chilli on top – like what we would call “chilli con carne” (or bean chilli for vegetarians). It’s not actually fries with chilli powder. They are quite delicious! You can also get chilli curly fries which are exactly what they sound like – curly stips of potato, deep fried, with the aforementioned chilli on them!

    • Reply Michelle January 16, 2015 at 11:34 AM

They’re the best – next time you’re in Sydney (anyone) visit the Oxford Tavern in Petersham – they have crinkle cut chilli cheese fries – among other delicious treats that Lorelai and Rori would love

🙂 I love this show…I might find it difficult to just watch ONLY one episode a week!

    • Reply Meet Me At Mikes January 15, 2015 at 3:48 PM

Hah! You can watch as many as you like – streak ahead! We’ll just discuss one every week or so, though! Otherwise I will get WAY behind!!! So you can streak ahead and then come back to discuss an old fave when I blog it! 🙂 xx

    Monkey Monkey Underpants!

Seriously this is the best show 🙂

  • Reply Bec January 15, 2015 at 11:00 AM

    Yes yes yes!

Also I reckon occasionally we should totes do a live gilmorealong where we tweet/insta in real time with the hashtag! (someone did that recently with Labyrinth and it was hilarious) Just pick a time that suits you and then tell people to all start their viewer of choice at the same time.

    • Reply Meet Me At Mikes January 15, 2015 at 11:10 AM

Yes! I had thought of that (and other exciting events/things I won’t go into yet!), but I want to start of simply and then we can grow from there! Thanks for being excited!
