Hello Pip-Life

:: Get Geeky : How I Blog : The Hardware Edition

Did you know that I work full-time as a blogger? I do. I work on Meet Me At Mike’s and I work on JustB (as editor) too.  It’s an all consuming but GREAT job. I get to do amazing stuff and work from home and do things things I like a lot of the time.  Pretty ace.
Not only do I work from home.  I have a whole arsenal of technology which helps me to blog away from home easily too.  Here’s what I use (at home and on the road!)  These are the things that make blogging easy and portable for me.
1. iMac : I have an iMac with a 22″ monitor at home. It’s beautiful and I love it. I used a PC since PCs were invented, but this year I switched over to Mac. It was a great decision for me.  Mac is perfect for the kind of image based stuff that I need to do. I love my iMac.  I bought mine from JB Hifi.
2. MacbookAir: I have an 11″ (small, skinny!) MacbookAir which fits super neatly in my satchel. When I bought it (thank you book royalties!) I measured it to make sure it would be toteable in my fave bag.  It is. Yay!  I use this all the time, too.  On the couch, on the road or in bed, my MacBookAir is there. Yeah.  I bought mine from JB Hifi.
3. Testra 3G Mobile Wi-Fi Modem: I bought this for when we are out and about, so that I don’t have to be tied to the house or rely on other people’s wireless networks.  It works well, holds its charge for around 3 hours and gets good coverage.  After 3 hours I charge it up (in the car or wherever via USB.)  It’s prepaid, so I just pay as I go and it seems to last for ages, data wise! I bought mine from JB Hifi.
4. iPhone 4S: I was given an older model iPhone by my friend Angela.  I used it until the volume button fell off and the camera quality started to fade a little.  I bought a new iPhone in March and I have not looked back. The camera is SO GOOD and I love it to pieces.  I use it to PIN things and TWEET things and FACEBOOK things.  And I use lots of different apps and Instagram too.  And if I forget my modem when I’m out, I can create a personal hotspot with my phone and link my Macbook to it to use the internet.  I bought mine from Kogan.
5. Olympus SP-550UZ Digital Camera: I am not the world’s best photographer, let’s face it. But I do try hard and the camera I bought 5 years ago is the camera I am using today, still.  I do fancy a new camera soon.  Maybe a sponsor will take pity on me and send me one?! (I am guessing not!)  I bought mine from Officworks.
6. iPad: I do have a first generation iPad. I don’t use it much.  I really love having a keyboard and the MacbookAir does most of the things an iPad would, perhaps not with the same display quality, but still super awesomely. I bought mine from JB Hifi.
7. SonyVaio Notebook: Okay. I don’t use this for blogging. BUT I do use it to watch stuff on in bed, while I work on the MacBookAir!  Sony gave me a pink Vaio because I worked on a project with them recently.  It’s coming in super handy, because the MacBook doesn’t have a CD drive.  The Vaio is my entertainment computer!
8. External Hard Drive: I need this. I store lots of photos and presentations on it. And I can tote it wherever I need to go. Interstate. Around the world. (That last sentence was a joke. I have not been ’round the world. But once I went to Bali!) I bought mine from Officeworks.
9. Mophie Juice Pack: You can charge this up and it’ll give your iPhone twice the lifespan, battery wise.  This is a good thing for me!  I keep the juice pack on charge and use it for days out or emergencies. Mine is yellow! I bought it online at Mophie.
Tomorrow I’ll tell you about the apps and software and other productivity things I use.  And maybe you can tell me what YOU use for blogging too?!

What kind of computer to you have?
What kind of camera do you have?
Do you use an iPhone?
Or do you have an iPad?
Are you an Android type?!
What kind of storage do you use for your photos/files?
Do you drain your phone battery all the time?!

Get geeky with me!

xx Pip

I love it that you are thrifty like that. I'm like that too. Only when my laptop broke did I buy a new one. Only when my iPhone broke did I get another. And my Olympus is still working, but kinda tired, so I'm bracing myself for that required upgrade! LOVE a notepad too. YES! xx

OoOh I love these kind of posts, I love to see and read what other bloggers use to see if what I'm doing can be done faster or better.

    I use the 22inch imac.
ipad 2nd Gen with Blogsy App for drafts.
    Nikon D90
An External Hard Drive which I don't like very much.
    and my iphone 4s.
I also carry a USB, if I do some art at work I can take it home with me.

That 'around the world' joke could well ring true Pip with all the hard work you do! you never know πŸ™‚

    Looking forward to today's post.

I love a bit of tech geekery! I like to keep it simple – I've just got two things!

My Sony Vaio laptop which is lightning fast and I love it I connect it up to a big monitor and wireless keyboard in our home office if I am doing lots of work, or else just have it in the lounge room as is when I'm doing fun stuff).

And my new Samsung Galaxy S3 phone – which I LOVE! It is so fast and has such a big screen, it's awesome. And the battery life is really good too.

I have a great internet plan at home and on my phone, so I have tons of data and never need any extra. And for file storage I use Dropbox, easy, no need for extra hardware!

I pretty much use my phone for photos now. I have never owned a "real" camera, but that is on my wishlist for one day.

    Hi Pip,

I don't blog but I do enjoy reading your blog! My job at the moment is looking after Baby and I have gone back to Uni.

I have a regular PC with dual monitors. It is ridiculously overpowerful for what I use it for (I'm pretty sure when the internet was first invented for the military and academia they did not have Pinterest in mind).

I have a little point and shoot camera – an old Canon ixus. When I want to take good photos of Baby I visit my sister who has a super fancy SLR camera.

I have an iPod touch but not any of the other iThings. I use it for games, music, apps and making lists – I even got a list app and a meal planner app so I can make lists more efficiently.

I am not very good with phones… My last several phones were from Kmart, my Nanna was so unimpressed with the last one that she gave me money for my Birthday to buy a new one.

I use a mix of external hard drives and memory sticks, it's a bit of a mess but I know where all the important bits are.

My phone battery does not get drained too much since I use the iPod for everything that is not calling and texting – the iPod battery gets drained all the time.

I have a computer science degree but I don't think my kids will believe me when they grow up…

I use an old macbook to edit photos and upload them but I use my family's iMac to code my web posts and blog layouts.
I'm a photographer so I use SO MANY! I use a Canon 500D but also a Pentax Mz6, Canon Ae-1 and a couple of others.
I got rid of my iPhone a couple of months ago and converted to Android. I regret it terribly.
I currently don't have a hard drive (bad of me, I know) but I have copies of my photos on my laptop and iMac.

What kind of computer to you have? Not at the moment. I 'borrow' from hubby or daughter. Now that I've read your input, I might be on the lookout for iMac.
What kind of camera do you have? Canon DSLR EOS 600d ( a gift from the Company ) and Olympus compact camera ( a gift from hubby). I use both a lot. Tha'ts because I scrapbook crazy.
Do you use an iPhone? Nope
Or do you have an iPad? Nope
Are you an Android type?! Nope
What kind of storage do you use for your photos/files? External Hard drive and CD's for backups.
Do you drain your phone battery all the time?! Yup. May have a look at your charger.

Such a lot of colourful shiny toys! I LOVE gadgetry, but the technology I use for work pretty much amounts to a $1 notepad from Officeworks, & a couple of rusty tin cans & a piece of string. Well, maybe not that bad… Like you, I also have an Olympus camera & I am not much of a photographer – strictly a point & shoot kinda gal. Mine's about seven years old & has a fantastic lens & takes amazing photos, so I'm sticking with it until it doesn't want to work anymore. I get attached to things & don't option up very often. For example, I have a very expensive professional-grade Epson printer I bought last year, but just today I plugged my old printer (also Epson, always Epson) back in because I prefer the way it prints on some types of uncoated paper, & it was SO nice to hear its old familiar bleeps & whirs once again!

'once you go mac, you never go back'…..

I went 'mac' when they were still just apples (yep waaaaaay back in the dark ages – the 1980s) never had a pc and quite frankly I think I'd give up technology entirely (or chew off my own hand) rather than TOUCH a sad android i-wannabe thingy…..

I'm going to go a little off track here…. I've actually just started looking at starting my own blog for my artwork mostly. do you have any advice on getting started?
    Thanks!

I have an iMac too, and heart it greatly. I made the big move to mac a few years ago, one of the best things I've ever bought! Makes my life so much easier, especially when i'm editing hundreds of photos.
On that note, my camera is a canon 450D. I bought it during my fine art degree and it's still kicking on and being useful. My fav lens is my 50mm. It gives a pretty focus to my crafty stuff.
I wish I had an iPhone! My current phone uses Android which annoys me sometimes. Too used to 'i' things (I also have an iPod Touch which I use pretty much every day).
I have the same HD drive as you. It's very handy to have! I'm obsessed with backing things up after a few disasters.
I don't know if I would use an iPad much – maybe just to play games and watch stuff. If i wanted a portable comp I'd rather a macbook like you so I could use a mouse/keyboard and use PS etc.
We may not be technology twins, but perhaps second cousins πŸ˜‰

wow thank you Pip just what I need.
Upgrading all my tech this year as I'm doing every thing on a 6yr old computer I got free with a sign up to broadband and a htc phone.I need an external hard drive as all my digital photos and vids are on usb storage. I have a lot of stuff from uni needs transferring to digital… big work task ahead….Fitting out our new studio at the moment so technology research is taking a back seat for us.
Thankyou for this insight into how you work it means alot.
    Loveing your blog as always.

    Similar πŸ™‚
    imac at home,
    mac book air when away,
a nikon d200 but funnily enough coming from an ex-professional photographer, I prefer to take most of my blog photos on my iphone4 – including all the the images from my last trip to Japan.
Need to get the external hard drive for traveling sorted and I love your juice pack – I have a much cheaper external charger for my phone but it's rather clumsy to use.
Can't wait to read what apps you use.

Wow, I feel totally out of this "i" group thing you guys have going πŸ˜‰
I've got my lovely lenovo laptop – works nearly as fast as I can think!
I usually use the camera on my phone a HTC swishy sort of one – guess that makes me an Android type!
    iPhone – nope
    iPad – nope
I do have an external hard drive but don't really use it, am quite new to blogging too so computer dealing with all my photos so far – think I will need to put them somewhere else soon.
And, erm yes – poor phone is totally ragged with me looking on facebook, twitter emails etc.
    Love it!!!

I have a 13" MacBook Air with a 27" external monitor. I take photos with a Panasonic Lumix GF1. I use my iPhone to death every day and sadly don't have an iPad. I definitely have a massive external HDD for storage. πŸ™‚

I like to use Evernote for jotting down blog post ideas and for my draft posts. It's super handy!

Ooh this was a fun post! I like technology!
My blogging arsenal isn't quite as fancy as yours.
I have a PC I built myself with a lovely Samsung 22 inch monitor, an older ASUS eeepc called 'eeeberlina', which I mainly use for browsing the net on the couch and pinning things because it really is small, iPhone 4S called 'iberlina', which I love. I'm addicted to photo apps and have 4 folders full. My camera is getting on now; a point and shoot Canon SX200IS. I really want to upgrade to a DSLR, I have an external hard drive that I won't name because I can't stand it! My phone battery is dead at the end of each day. I spend too much time on my phone. And that's enough of me me me!

Battery charger thing is good! Feels just like a regular phone cover, but charges a dead phone or bumps up the life of a non-dead phone! Not cheap, but useful. And all buttons and camera are accessible with cover on, of course! x
