Feeling A Bit Sh*t? Read These Things

October 27, 2018
Phoebe

Want to spend some time online with a cup of coffee and three slices of delicious toast, but don’t want to risk dipping into too much negative stuff? (You can get back to that on Monday!) Here’s a few non-negative things I spotted which might tickle your fancy …

Two excited penguin gents have become parents, thanks to a brilliant fostering program at a Sydney Aquarium. Read about them here.

Delightful revolutionary Marieke Hardy’s crack at running the Melbourne Writers Festival was a huge creative AND fiscal success . (And of course it was, because she’s a clever cookie!) Read about it here.

Two storks have been romancing one another for over a decade and there’s MUCH more to the story than that (like the fact that the lady stork lives with a human man, for instance!) Read about them here – and a plot twist with fisticuffs update here.

I am learning about intersectional feminism in an ever-shifting world, and when I heard this particular chat about it, I understood a LOT better. It’s at the 41.30 mark on this episode of The High Low. The whole episode is interesting though. Listen to it all!

An eleven-year-old boy is helping care for his dad – who has dementia – and he can teach us a LOT about compassion and adapting to new circumstances. Read about him here.

Helen and Quincy

Some ace friends – Helen and Quincy – were invited to curate a very Melbourne (Abbotsford, in fact!) playlist by YouTube and it’s a corker. Listen to that here.

STEM boss Raye Montague (above) died recently. She was a brilliant woman whose efforts are so amazing and inspiring that it would be wrong to try to sum them up in a sentence. Even though that sort of did, a bit. Much better to read about her here.

(Some of) the fashion from Killing Eve is helpfully unraveled in case you had some spare pennies in your cute looks fund – or simply wanted to add to your imaginary wardrobe on Pinterest. Check that out here.

And still on Killing Eve I loved Chitra Ramaswamy’s piece about all the ways series writer Phoebe Waller-Bridge has turned the usual thriller trope on its head. Read that here. (Also? Old but interesting profile of aforementioned Phoebe here.)

As my (storkless) nest annoyingly continues to empty out, I am resisting the urge to forward my kids articles about families who continue to live together when their children reach adulthood. I particularly loved one by Nadine Chemali for SBS. Read that here.

Author Blair Imani just released her very first book and her parents’ reaction was pretty unbeatable (and freaking adorable, let’s be frank!)  Read about that here.

Sarah-Jayne Blakemore would like you to know that teenage brains are marvellous and evolving (and not ratbag-ish or delinquent!) Read more about that here.

For the kids:

Look at this bonkers otter!

Phew! Hope you enjoy clicking through these fun and interesting things. See you back here soon, peaches!

x Pip

PS: Here is an amazing video my friend Ruth sent me. You will love the heck out of it.

ah Pip you find the best things. Feeling a bit sh*t hit the spot as a title & love the content here.
I cannot imagine my nest emptying. But it will. Its funny (not) as parents we seem to spend our time from the second they are born pushing them onto the next thing, to ensure independent humans. I found a photo of my two (now teens) as toddlers & I felt an overwhelming urge to want to jump into that picture.
You are inspiring me with your crochet at the moment & endeavour to tea cosy along!
