Craft Saves The Day!

Craft and handmade things can save the day, you know? (Despite what that person in the NY Times says.)

Today, as I handed this blanket over to the friend I’d made it for, I knew that it was a glimmer of good in a quite freezing, at times gloomy day.  Sometimes the very best thing you can do is to make something for someone else. It makes sense in lots of ways that don’t involve dollars.

While craft is often viewed as a business or something to master with perfection or something to keep our emotional health on track, it has other powers too and can be applied liberally in the following situations:

When you want to show someone you’ve spent some crafty time thinking of them each day…
When you want to gift a thing that can’t be gifted by anybody else in the world…
When you want to sneak into someone’s house, through a thing, and remind them that you’re around…
When you want to create pompoms as metaphors for people/pups…
When you want to celebrate someone in the same crafty way your parents or grandparents might have…

When you want to translate your admiration or friendship or love into something tangible and place it in that person’s hands…
When you want to say ‘Sometimes things are shit, but let’s look at this woolly cute thing!’
When you want to say ‘you are one million times worth the time it took to make this…’

That, my friend, is when craft saves the day.

From beautiful projects which bring people together to help others, like Craft Hope or your very own Softies for Mirabel, to the wonderful crafty space that has opened up near me called The Nest (in Brisbane), which puts its profits towards making their activities accessible to women and children who are less fortunate…craft does save the world, Pip, it does!

Oh my that blanket is incredibly beautiful and awesome!!
I’m also making something for someone doing it a bit tough right now.
And as I’m making each stitch I’m trying to reinforce it with love and care.
I do believe craft can save the day, or make the day at the very least.

The blanket is gorgeous! I love it so much, such a great use of colour!
Re: The article – I don’t think many people actually believe that buying handmade will save the world economy but some people (like me) really hate mass produced goods. I’ve always favoured, secondhand and handmade (by me or someone else). I bought a $50 handmade scarf last week, its wool and silk and is so soft and lovely. Much nicer than an acrylic Target version. I think the author forgot one major point, that some people have to have a gazillion new things all of the time. I don’t buy a lot, but I buy well.

So great Pip! This blanket, I’ll have you know, was the driving force behind me learning to crochet. So there you go, another way craft saves the day!
