Yep. I think we should all be at it again! I do! Remember last year we started ‘A Granny A Day‘ over on Flickr? No matter if you don’t, but trust me, we did! Well, I’ve only about one quarter finished my HUGE Nanna rug, and I figure A Granny A Day will help me complete my mission this year! There are over 1000 photos over at the Granny Pool (which, despite it’s moniker, is not a geriatric swimming centre) : all providing inspiration and chatter about the art of the Granny Square.
Those are my first 14 squares for 2010 here. I’m not sure how many I’m aiming for… I’ll have to do a bit more measuring and imagining. I’ll get back to you with my target later in the week! But regardless of numbers, this is a GREAT way to practice and to just diddle about a bit with a hook. It’s fun. Truly!
Perhaps you don’t know how to crochet? I think this is your time to learn. It will take a little bit of time, and hopefully you won’t cry tears of frustration like I did…! Persevere and you will be so so so glad you did!
A basic Granny Square requires a few simple skills. You need to learn how to hold the yarn, how to make a slip knot, how to do chain stitch and how to do treble stitch. There are lots of links over here to help you get started with Granny Squares. PLUS :: each day, from tomorrow, I am going to show you those skills right here, with lots of images, video links and tips. We’re going to take it REALLY slow. For the absolute beginner. If you are already crocheting, well then you can just skip over the how-to and start stitching!
We’ll also be posting Guest Tutor links here – so if you have a great pattern and photos that you’d like to upload to your blog, DO email me and we’ll be sure to schedule you in to our natterings!
So, are you in?! Would you like to be part of A Granny A Day too?! You can sign up below, if you like. There are no penalties for not keeping up! And there are no tests or show-and-tells. Just do this for fun, and show off only if you want to! This is for newbies and the more advanced too! You might only want to play for 10 days and make 10 squares…. or maybe for 120! Up to you! Sign ups close in November 2010! So you have PLENTY of time to mull this over, if you are the non-committal type!
Tomorrow I am going to cover SLIP KNOTS and HOLDING THE YARN and CHAIN STITCH. Because that will get you going, and get you practicing and eventually grannying too! Hope that sounds a-ok to you!
My book (offered here with FREE SHIPPING at a ridiculous price!) also shows you all this stuff too, step by step with cute hand-drawn (by me!) illustrations! As does this one by lovely Erika Knight! Or just keep popping back here! What could be simpler?!
xx Pip

Hi Pip,
It’s Heather Smith here – we met at the PROBLOGGER conference in 2013. We both had books for sale – mine were accounting – yours were much more popular!
I’d like to ask you permission to use the image at the very top in a presentation I am creating and this slide would be about writing – and how you sew pieces of your writing together to form a book
If you grant permission – I will of course give full credit to your site.
I look forward to hearing from you.
Thank-you for your time

Most definitely Heather! No worries at all. You have my permission. (And thanks for asking AND including me!)
