Bumper Edition: Feeling A Bit Sh*t? These Stories Might Make You Feel A Bit Better

The Tiger Who Came To Tea

It’s time for everybody’s some people’s one of my favourite things – Feeling A Bit Shit! Let’s face it, the news is so very often less that bolstering, so why not wade through some things that are a bit more positive or cheering?

Let’s do just that …

1/ Sam Neill is the only person who truly knows how to use social media. Let’s be clear on that. Read more here.

Banksy at the Biennale

2/ Banksy set up an unauthorised stall of artwork on a Venice street during the Biennale.

3/ This old BBC video of the now late Judith Kerr returning to her childhood home is lovely and restrained.

4/ A study says that putting a clean and tidy bird feeder in your garden is helpful and in fact encouraged. It’s helping to boost bird populations, they say. Read more here.

5/ A guide to quick pickling from Crowded Kitchen. These look brilliant and I’m going to make some this weekend.

6/ Holly Throsby’s brilliant book Goodwood is being turned into a TV series by the ABC!

The series is being produced by Alice Bell and Claudia Karvan, with Imogen Banks (who produced Offspring, Tangle, Puberty Blues and The Beautiful Lie) executive producing. Excitingly the TV adaptation is being written by Alison Bell and Sarah Scheller, the team behind brilliant mum-life comedy The Letdown.

7/ Karen O and Danger Mouse’s new track is brilliant.

8/ I love the ‘noticing wall’ a LOT. Noticing things is my jam. More on it here. (I had something like this in my shop in the olden days.)

9/ I love this promo from the German Women’s World Cup team!

10/ Beatboxing is hard for babies.

11/ This man was a roofer, but he decided to retrain as a midwife. <3

“I chose midwifery because I wanted something life-affirming after my partner’s death. I had lived with her for 15 years when she got lung cancer, and I nursed her until she died five months later. Midwifery appealed to me: it’s a job in which you see the start of new life.”

12/ 25 delicious-looking vegetable soups to make this weekend. Or on another weekend. That’s fine too.

13/ Mick Jagger pretty much dances like a preschooler. So good.

14/ I liked reading this article about the super powers of making things because that’s what I am always on about too!

15/ Some people are so, so, so kind.

16/ Here are some encouraging alpacas.

17/ If you want to read more, you need to choose big, fat books, says The Guardian!

18/ We all know someone like this.

19/ This is brilliant. – “A new Twitter account is outing shoddy reporting in science stories,” Quartz reports. “The account @justsaysinmice tweets about stories that rely on a study of mice to make claims about human health.”

20/ You can buy The Tiger Who Came To Tea teacups but they are very expensive but also great. #swoon

I love this! I can remember your shop from a Melbourne visit years ago, and am so glad to discover this blog. I discovered Judith Kerr writing as a kid, and am very lucky to have one precious illustrated children’s book to read my toddler. Knowing her story makes the whimsical illustrations all the more precious. Also liked the noticing wall. And thanks for book & tv series tips for the winter. The Split!

This list of full of things that make me happy!
Tim loves his birds so we have a few feeders out. It’s mainly galahs that come but occasionally we’ll get some parrots too. Good to know we are doing something helpful.
VERY happy to read that Goodwood is being made into a show. Loved both of Holly’s books.
And just this week I started Four Fires by Bryce Courtney. I didn’t realise when I picked it up but it’s 1004 pages long!!!! It’s quite overwhelming to think of reading that many pages but I know I’ll get through it.

Happy to hear you are almost back to 100% health xx
