Bright Futures + Fuzzy Little People

Hello!

How are you going?! I am going good. Finding my feet in the new neighbourhood and trying to get a new neighbourhood daily routine going. It’s weird, right? You move house and everything old is out the window. You have to find new ways of being and doing. It’s exciting and a bit unsettling. But I am more settled every day, so the future looks BRIGHT!

I think once my craft room/office is unpacked and sorted I will feel a bit more grounded. I just need to get a filing cabinet and maybe a little couch/sofa bed type thing. Then I’ll be all set! I sort of feel like I am staying in a holiday house, if that makes any sense?! I am looking forward to the familiar homey feeling creeping in, instead.

On the weekend we went to Camberwell Market for a bit of coffee drinking and mooching about. Then we had the kids over for a late lunch aka Family Feast. It was really ace. I love those kinds of weekends. A bit of mooching and a bit of family-slash-snacking. Nice.

Then guess what happened? My friend Gemma had her baby! Yes! Yay! On Sunday night her little baby boy was born. Everyone is doing well and I have cuddled that baby QUITE a lot already. So nice to be an adopted-kind-of-aunty to a fresh little person. He’s super cute, fuzzy and alert. My favourite kind of baby!

Do you know what else? Rin and I are going to Bali together for ten days in November. I am excited because the last time we went on a holiday together was probably when she was about 3 years old (we went to Tasmania to visit my Mum!) That is 25 years ago. Surely it’s time for another mother-daughter holiday by now?! Mostly we are going to eat things and read books, I think. That is the plan, anyway.

Because I am planning a little break, I’ve been thinking a bit about stuff. I’ve been thinking about how we favour the familiar when we are on familiar territory, but when we are adventuring/travelling out in the world we’re happier to take a risk (because we often HAVE TO!)

Do you think that is true for you? It’s true for me. I like to do the riskier things when I absolutely have to, but I will take the familiar choice/route by default, if it’s an option. I think that’s why change and travel are so good for us. They push us out of our usual comfort zone and help us swap the familiar for the fresh.

It’s weird that we choose familiar if we can, because it’s the FRESH and risky than often makes us feel alive!  And yet, the familiar = comfort and there’s nothing nicer than comfy….

Does ANY of that make any sense?!

Your new place looks so lovely! I agree about how it’s good to step out of our comfort zone from time to time, but it’s also nice to be comfy in the familiar things we like too. 🙂

What a beautiful big room with that window looking out over the rooftops. Yes, I know what you mean about feeling like you’re living in a holiday house. But it will pass and soon feel like ‘proper’ home. I’m a bit addicted to risk and that fresh shake up the routine feeling. I think I probably need to become more chilled with the routine and familiar, and not think that every tiny routine necessarily means I am the world’s most boring person. Does that make sense?!

Makes perfect sense to me. It’s good to have things that push us out of our comfort zones from time to time. Inertia can be hard thing to fight!

I definitely think it’s true for me too. I love to walk around my neighborhood because I always see something I’ve never noticed before and I’ve lived here for over six years! I also tend to watch the same movies over and over – i.e., Pretty In Pink 🙂 – but always notice something different no matter how many times I’ve seen them. 🙂

Pip, you make total sense, as always!

Fresh and risky definitely makes me feel more alive and helps me to reach for the stars, although it’s often difficult to take that first step towards fresh and risky since the familiar is SO much easier – and less risky! 🙂

Hi Pip! Love your blog. Yes, moving house takes an enormous amount amount of recalibrating, establishing of systems to make life run smoothly. I did it three months ago and I’m still getting it all under control Your place looks gorgeous by the way, love that long low cupboard for records under the window! Enjoy your hols. Cate

You ALWAYS make sense, Pip Lincolne! And lots of it. You have a uncanny ability of often putting my thoughts eloquently into published words, and with extra amazing embellishment. You’re such a good sort like that. Thanks for signing my copy of your book the other day. I felt like a total doofus-fangirl, but life’s too short to care about feeling silly! (I mostly urge myself to embrace this thinking) love to you and yours and your astoundingly wonderful new nest that is utterly you and Cam all over! oXo

It makes perfect sense! I’m a bit unsettled at present because we have a baby due in Jan which, while exciting, means lots of change. I find I’m reaching for comfort books and movies, and visiting familiar places. I watched Pretty in Pink last night over a few choices I hadn’t seen before. But maybe I’m missing out and should be embracing all the upcoming change. Things might be even better!

Oh yes, completely makes sense, Pip. Yesterday I took a different walking route around our streets and I found beautiful plants and views I hadn’t seen before. On Monday, my Pip and I walked through a suburb we often drive through but don’t WALK around. So nice to see it through different, closer eyes. And I think when we go away, well, there is just no normal or routine, is there? It’s freeing and allows us to try things we mightn’t at home. I think it’s lovely to have a mother-duaghter holiday after a 25 year break’
