Michelle Crawford is one of my very favourite bloggers. Not only does she take gorgeous photographs, she writes beautifully on her blog Hugo & Elsa, so beautifully in fact that her book is about to come out. (See that here!)

Michelle spends a lot of time cooking, styling and photographing food in her pretty weatherboard house in Tasmania’s Huon Valley. She took a little bit of time out from all that to give us her best tips on writing well…

My tips for writing online – here they are….

Keep it positive
Some people are really great at writing about sad things, they can do it with wit and style.  But that’s not an easy thing to do.   And generally most people want to read about things that make them feel good. I learnt early that even if you have the crappiest day ever – looking for that one positive moment and focusing on that can give you the inspiration to write something truly meaningful and a pleasure to read.

Write for yourself
I find that if I try to think about what people would like to read, I lose my words. I can’t think of anything to say. If you write about things that interest you, that you care about or are passionate about, it shows in your words and people will want to read about you, the real person and what they care about.

Use bum glue
I read this on cookery writer Belinda Jeffrey’s instagram feed and I love it.  Sometimes, you should be writing but might find yourself procrastinating and cleaning out that third drawer like Belinda rather than sitting down and writing those words.  Glue yourself to the chair with some bum glue and make yourself write those words down. Even if they’re not great at first, getting something down that you can work on, edit and refine will get you going.  Until the glue wears off!

I love bum glue. That’s the best concept ever.
