Eat Pip-Life

All of the foods + Poh + a bit of pouring two cups

March 8, 2016

One of the things I love about FOOD is how good it can make you feel. Thinking about food, planning snacks, shopping for ingredients, preparing meals, eating it all up. These are things I love. At our house, food really does equal love. I know that can make for confusing relationships with BLD (breakfast, lunch and dinner), but we navigate the food is love life with a fairly cavalier attitude and everyone seems okay so far. Phew.

The last few months have been pretty stressful at our place, so this has played out in various foodie ways. There has been a lot of watching TV shows related to food, for instance. My favourite is Poh. I love watching her shows and I have a few of her DVDs because I am a Poh devotee. My mother-in-law Dure is part Malaysian and she gifted me a love of Malaysian food which is perfectly satisfied when watching/cooking Poh style. (Also – Poh is super adorable, wears ponchos and fluffy jumpers, is colourful and ALSO really creative, right? What’s not to love about that!) Poh helps when things are a bit patchy at our place.

If you follow me on Instagram, you will have been following the stress-relieving foodie leanings of the last few months, I am sure. I really HAVE also been doing lots of crafty projects too – but many of them are part of a) secret solo creative plans or b) collaborations with other rad types that need to be kept under wraps. (I have been quietly embroidering and crocheting squares and also making scarf-y type things, FYI.) I am so glad we are (allegedly, hello 38 degrees!) heading into cooler Autumn weather soon, though… The light will be right for making.

But back to the food.

We’ve been wavering between: comfort food for one/two, big feasts for the whole family and food to take to friends. It’s a pretty varied bunch of circumstances, for sure, but we’ve managed to cover all our bases pretty nicely…

The very bottom picture was from Rin’s birthday feast last night (If you are new here, Rin is my daughter and she just turned 28!)

The very top picture was from when I went on the radio a little while ago. It features, as you may know, coconut ice and chocolate crackles, which I discussed on Clare’s show on the ABC. Later Chris Isaak was on her show and he said my coconut ice and chocolate crackles were ‘beautiful!’ So that’s pretty great.

We also talked about the beautiful book Nonna to Nana by Jessie and Jac DeBlasi. (Remember I wrote about that on my blog ages ago?! They went on to do amazing things, of course, like self-publish a nanna-rific book! Shazam!)

I’ve been doing other things too…

+ Like crumbling muesli and brown sugar and butter over stone fruit and baking them to make Cheaty Crumble.
+ Like eating banana splits.
+ Like reading this Winona Ryder interview by Tavi Gevinson.
+ Listening to Clare (sometimes catching up online due to having other bits and bobs going on between 1 and 3!) I especially loved her interview with Eden.
+ Like flying to Bundaberg to hang out with some amazing people. I had the best time! Bundy people are so nice and they are about a LOT more than ginger beer (as amazing as that is) and rum (aka crazy juice.) Special thanks to Rebecca, Jess, Wendy, Hannah, another Hannah and Nicole for their radness! (And to many others too!)
+ Like posting about International Women’s Day. Something to consider and act upon in some way, right?
+ Like crunching toast. I love the grainy GF bread from Backhaus Bakery in Melbourne. I toast it within an inch of its life and have it with some Wattle Valley Brie, cherry tomatoes from our garden and a good splursh* of Sriracha. YUM!
+ Like sipping soup. I’ve been making a really delicious clear soup with a good hunk of fresh turmeric, ginger and garlic in it to keep myself healthy and happy. It’s working a treat and I love the fragrance and taste of it too. YUM!
+ Like searching for Green & Blacks White Chocolate in Melbourne… where has it gone?! It is my fave and nobody stocks it anymore!
+ Like drinking tea. Madura English Breakfast tea OR tea made with honey, lemon, ginger and turmeric.

Actually, I was reading a cute and sensible thing about my Great Grandfather, Frank Boreham the other day, in relation to tea. It was a quote by his son, Frank Jr (my grandmother’s brother.)

“My father was a great tea-drinker. He always loved to drink two big cups of tea and he would pour the two of them out at the same time and put the saucer over the second cup, rather than letting the tea continue to stew in the pot.”

Another brilliant idea from Frank, as usual… Pour two cups, guys! Pour TWO cups.

I may just have prattled on enough, I think…? Hope you are well petals. Love to you. Thanks for reading!

PS – see those two saucepans up the very top of this post? We found them by the side of the road! They are Villeroy & Boch Acapulco ones! How lucky are we?! (Sorry for all the exclaiming!)

I love food too. For all of the reasons you said. Particularly the planning, preparing – all the chopping and stirring and good smells – and sharing. Food is pretty central to all the good things in my life too. Your photos are very yummy looking. I think I want to make a feast! Maybe an Indian style one.

I’ve had a bit of a blogging block, but I’ve almost finished one. It doesn’t help that I’ve been busy and there are always other things calling for my attention. I love this foodie post. I always know I’m feeling poorly when I don’t feel like food. I’m so jealous that Chris Isaak not only tasted your sweets but enjoyed them. I could give him something sweet and delicious to eat I can tell you. Now where was I?

Because two cups are better than one! 🙂 xx

You’re back! So nice to read your words again, Pip. Looks like you’re soothing yourselves with all kinds of delicacies. You found those amazing saucepans by the side of the road?! Who even are you! There are amazing things to be found by the roadside. I once found a couch in a lane way. Turns out it was GUY PEARCE who was throwing it out, and now it graces our lounge room. AND it’s a fold-out bed. Cheers to reclaimed hard rubbish!

I was just thinking ” gosh, haven’t read anything from Pip in a while ” & then here you are in my feed! Good. I’ve missed you!

I love Poh too. She seems like such a great person. I love that she laughs lots.

I want to see if I can find that book. You know I love nana/nonna food most of all.

    And cute plates!

I think I have just needed a bit LESS blogging of late, as the people in my life have needed me more. I have been missing it here A LOT!! Poh is the best, right?! Also… remember when we MET EACH OTHER IN PERTH?! xx
