This Is A Sponsored Post for Annie Sloan Unfolded

Do you know what happened to us? We spilled curry on our simply fine, but quite boring IKEA table. It all started out good and well, but before you knew it there was Butter Chicken ahoy and do you think I could get that outta the table top? I really could not. What to do?

Well, I painted it white and had a bit of a think. Actually I painted TWO coats of Pure White Chalk Paint™ by Annie Sloan! over that pesky spill and it disappeared. Phew. Kind of. A white table top is not really my thing. I’m a bit colour obsessed. I decided to fancy it up and paint some pointy bits on it.

I taped it out with painters’  masking tape and then got painting. I wasn’t particularly careful with my shapes, but I made sure the tape was stuck down firmly to give me nice clean seep-free lines. I made sure to apply plenty of paint, painting in the same direction for neatness. Once it had dried, I pulled the tape off and high-fived myself. Pointy bits are my thing!

Next, I rubbed on 2 coats of Annie Sloan Soft Wax (in clear) to finish it off nicely. You just rub the wax on with a soft cloth and it seals the paintwork, making it more long-wearing. It gives it a nice sheen too.

The Chalk Paint™ by Annie Sloan colours I used for the fancier table with pointy bits are:

Base Colour For The Table Top:
Pure White

Pointy Bits:
Henrietta (the pink!)
Arles (the yellow/mustard!)
Napoleonic Blue (the blue!)

Finishing Wax:
Soft Wax (clear)

It turned out really cute, right? I like the idea of customizing furniture like this in a simple, contemporary way. You don’t need to be a very excellent painting artiste… You just need a bit of time up your sleeve and a cheeky, make-it-work approach!

Here’s how I did it (in case you want to do this, or a similar project) too!

I would love to spruce up some Christmas gifts this year. Who knows, it could turn into a new obsession.

I have a vision of me as a great artist, with my paints spread around me, wearing a paint splattered smock, and a canvas rapidly becoming a master piece, sadly I have not talent for painting at all. However, I am a great success at changing the look of cupboards, rejuvenating old chairs and renewing walls

Annie Sloan I do lovingly aspire,
    An upcycled table to acquire,
Just like yours with pointy bits,
Destined to be a family hit.
    Dull and boring soon deserted,
    Artisitic flair now inserted.

We are moving into our first home on Monday. I have a stack of old furniture, cane hampers, light shades and more that I intend giving a new life to with some creative ideas. I want our home to be unique and reflect our love and happiness with a welcoming vibe

What wouldn’t I love to paint!!! The cupboard in the games room, the chair on the front verandah, a small bedside cupboard…and the list goes on. I think once I start painting things it may be very difficult to stop.

I have two unique wooden pot plant holders (kerb side pickup) and I’d love to give them a gorgeous new life with a Chalk Paint makeover.

What a chalky delight my courtyard would be, if only I could paint my drab recycled items with thee. A spring explosion of soft hues, amongst the pots of blooming blooms. Concrete backdrop set to enhance, the colourful adornment of Sloan’s moan-repelling finesse.

I have a set of bedside tables that my mum gave me ( bless her ) but her taste is not mine. I’m loving naturals at the moment but will probable be unable to resist a splash of colour as well.

I want to paint doors, especially the one that goes from kitchen to laundry as it has grease marks on it I can’t remove (I’ve tried) and so many splats on it, it needs this paint real bad. Then there is the toilet door, this could just as badly do with a coat of chalk paint. Then there is a small wall jutting off from the front door which I want to jazz up and then I could stick a pretty wall art thing on there. Then there’s the front door, sanded and ready for this paint. Then to bring the look together I’d like to paint some pot plants (pots) and I have a ragged looking old wooden bench on the front porch which would look great with some chalk paint……………to cut a long story short I’d go to town with this paint!!!!

My husband hates when it’s verge side pick up time, because I can’t drive past shabby furniture looking for a bit of love. Our garage is so full of unwanted furniture that we park in the street. I have these two amazing bookcases with engraved ivy patterns up each side that I would love to give some attention to and convert them into towel storage for the bathroom.

Our decent sized coffee table that’s looking a bit drab and worse for wear. Be nice to bring it back to life and have it become a feature and talking point.

I would love to paint some baskets for my market stall. I’m collecting shallow baskets from op shops to collect my bits together for my stall, but I need to paint them as they are all different colours. I’m thinking a rainbow of pastel shades will look wonderful holding all my sewn goodies!

    A desk I have
    Oh brown and boring
    I try to work
    But can’t stop yawning
    It needs a lift
    Some funk, some pop
    A groovy lick
    Of paint on top
    A Jackson Pollock?
    Picasso? Klee?
    As long as it
    Is fun and free
    So paint I will
    So paint I might
    For paint will make
    My office bright <3

For ages I’d been needing to put my photography gear some place safe, because the floor just doesn’t make a good storage space. I didn’t have the money to spend so I just bided my time until something right came along. As luck would have it my neighbours recently put out their hard waste, and sitting on the nature strip was a near perfect Ikea chest of drawers – totally perfect for getting my photography crap off the ground. I checked with the neighbours, and they let me keep the chest. I grabbed my husband’s skateboard and towel, and towed the chest back up the driveway and gave it a home in my bedroom.
Sometimes in a bored and lonely moment I think about painting that chess of drawers. I think Scandinavian is very, very ‘in’ at the moment. 😉

Pip, you’ve inspired me! I have a scratched up dining table that I undercoated, maybe two years ago, waiting for it’s time to shine. I haven’t been courageous enough to go for it. Your table looks great! I like your pointy bits, I’m thinking big circles. What’s the worst that can happen? I can sand and do over …. Raring to go …. Now, colours, hmmmmmm

I have an old blanket box that is really lacking character and that personal reflection of personalty to portray me. My head has concocted a shabby chic image of how I would like it to be.

  • Reply Seana October 13, 2014 at 10:48 PM

I would paint the small book shelves in our hallway…I stole them from Mums garage Dad made them ages ago they are a strange shape. Then I have these giant wooden candle sticks that are looking a bit dated in dark burgundy. After that maybe some picture frames my whole hallway is a bit dark.

I have some olive oil tins I would love to paint and plant herbs in them, parsley, mint and thyme. But I also have two old daggy looking bedside tables and a long low chest of draws that I would love to brighten up in my daughters’ room.

  • Reply Malinda @mybrownpaperpackages October 13, 2014 at 8:41 PM

Your table looks great Pip, very creative. I think I would paint a sneaky stripe of colour on the small inside strip of all the doors in the house so it was a surprise pop of colour whenever you opened the door. How much fun would that be!

  • Reply Kellie October 13, 2014 at 8:24 PM

Everything and anything, just try and stop me. But probably first I would paint my 1 year olds chest of draws and cupboard, which are second hand boring pine. She deserves something as bright as she is.

  • Reply Kate October 13, 2014 at 8:08 PM

    LOVE the table! Great job.
I would paint my one year old’s high chair. It is a hideous brown. (I got it from the tip shop!!) I look at it every day and think I really need to paint it with some bright fun colours!!

  • Reply Lisa Rushton October 13, 2014 at 7:58 PM

Giving new life to things that people toss away gives me the greatest buzz. There are so many ways in which I would love to play with this paint, but the first thing that came to mind is the smallest project I have on the go right now. I would love to paint some colour onto a simple wooden chair I rescued from the op shop. It was ugly and altogether festy when I picked it up for $5, but with some tlc it is now a fresh white canvas, waiting for a pop of colour. x

  • Reply Renae October 13, 2014 at 7:17 PM

ooh thanks for the chance to win, love your table! I inherited a couple of chairs from my great aunt a few weeks back. They are already lovely and bright, but the paint is old, worn, possibly lead based, and needs replacing. I’d love to paint bits of them in all different colours, then Elijah (my three year old) and I can sit on the porch with our rainbow chairs eating biscuits and drinking green tea 🙂

  • Reply Kate Berry October 13, 2014 at 7:04 PM

You are a very clever woman Pip. If only I had a tiny bit of your craftiness. x

  • Reply Sarah Fuller October 13, 2014 at 7:00 PM

That table looks fantastic! I have actually used chalk paint before, on some old ladders which I use as towel racks in the kitchen but I’d love to give them another go. I have an old family mahogany wardrobe which I am putting in my new baby girl’s (due Nov) room. The problem is it’s just so dark and I’d like to make it fun! I have painted it in pure white already and it looks great but the sample pots would be perfect for fun adding! So many ideas 🙂 and then there’s the bookcase in my son’s room…

  • Reply Diana October 13, 2014 at 5:29 PM

Hi Pip. I would love to paint some circles on our boring white kitchen wall. I am hoping that they would look like floating bubbles, some tiny and some large.

  • Reply Helen October 13, 2014 at 4:59 PM

I’m creating a little writing nook for my daughters who I’m homeschooling from next year. We were given a great solid kid’s desk & chair, only prob is they have slightly creepy golliwogs on them…too country cottage for me not to mention not real PC. A bit of geometric pointy painting would really freshen it up & inspire us all for this next phase…I’m sure it would help great handwriting & stories come to the surface for my girls.

Gosh! What do I NOT want to pain!?!?

I want to paint pot plant holders, lamps, frames, side tables, shelves, walls and the list goes on and on. First up though, is probably a really cute tiny desk that is currently a dark mahogany. I’d love to lighten it and brighten it was a pale blue or green.

  • Reply Helen October 13, 2014 at 2:40 PM

I’d paint our little boys’ beds – my husband bought them while I was out of town and though I don’t want to discourage this rare and super-admirable burst of initiative in any way at all, they’re BLACK AND BROWN (shudder), and this way I could totally blame a stealth re-paint in delicious jaunty colours on you. Sorry about that. But thanks for the awesome comp/read!

Hey Pip – I love your triangle table! Very creative way to hide a mess – with two little people in my house, I need to be painting all the things!

What would I really paint? That’s easy! We’ve got two very useful, but very, very ugly bedside tables, inherited from an uncle and aunt when we first got married (11 years ago!). Think 80s, overdone design features with an unpleasant orange stain. They are not friends with our lovely dark stained timber bedhead, and I’ve been wanting to do something about them pretty much since we got them. I’d love to experiment with blue, yellow and aqua. The chalk paint would be so very welcome!

Wowsers! Looks fantastic. I’m excited to get started on painting my tired old furniture. It needs some TLC, don’t want to buy new when I can do this instead! I’d like to start with my little coffee table, my Pa salvaged it from a hard-rubbish collection years ago; tightened the legs, gave it a varnish then and gave it to me as a moving-out-of-home gift. Pa is not longer here, but he would be super-pleased to see me giving the table another lease of life – again!

    Hi Pip,
Love your table. I have been swooning over Annie Sloan paints for a while now, but living in a regional city means nobody stocks it locally and I do like to touch things before buying for the first time. I recently rescued (grabbed from side of road) a lovely old desk which I want to paint for my 13 year old niece. She wants a beachy theme and I think ASCP will be the way to go!

A little bit ago we were given an old Millard Floria 1962 Caravan. She (I say she because she has been named Betty-Ruth) is needing a bit of a fix-up and a makeover. In about 2 months time the fix-up bit will be happening and then I get to do the fun part, the makeover! I’d love to use the paint to bring Betty-Ruth back to life.

I would love to do up my six old (1950’s ish)dining table chairs- collected from markets and handsomely varnished with various original colours peaking through. We’ve had them for about 13 years and I would love to get some chalk paint on them – maybe white with a bit of dip leg action- and spots or ‘pointy bits’ on the seat. Each chair is different and I think they would look fab with my recycled timber table! Oh the fun of a revamp!!

I would paint my son’s change table. Since changing his nappy is such an unpleasant task, I may as well do it on something a bit more colourful!

  • Reply Christie October 12, 2014 at 10:07 PM

Woah that looks AWESOME. I want to get some sad looking outdoor furniture from goodwill and make it all my own with a lick of paint, then my housemates and I can sit around on warm summer nights and drink cocktails the same colours as the table. So nice! Our courtyard is lonely without furniture.
    Thanks Pip!
    Yay!

I picked up a home-made timber dolls house at a garage sale around the corner just yesterday — the little girl was all grown up and grown out of it now but all it needs is a fresh coat of paint (and possibly a few washi tape embellishments!) and it will be good as new and ready for my little one to enjoy. So please pick me 🙂

BTW Pip your colour choices were gorgeous 🙂
