I love this letter that Isabel sent me, all the way from China. Hi Isabel! It made it!
It seemed perfectly apt that I should read this the day after Mother’s Day.
Having children was something that always made sense to me and I probably would have had at least one more, if it was up to me. Of course, everyone’s experience is so different, and it’s only lately, as I am getting older, that I am starting to truly understand the complexities of choosing to parent or not, or indeed not being able to easily realise a choice you’ve made, as one of our earlier letter writers pointed out.
When I think about my own parenting choices, I realise how lucky I am to a) have been able to have kids when I did and b) to have the kind of personality that means I can make the best of things, no matter what… To be the kind of person that jumps in and sorts out the details later. Resilience and flexibility are so helpful when it comes to parenting, I reckon.
I love reading about how life is for other people, don’t you, especially when their story is hand written? It provides some perspective and poses questions about how we get where we are… Nice.
It’s also pretty great to ponder how things could so easily be different, how we might behave if they were, how things feel for other humans, in general.
I love your letter, Isabel! I loved the Chinese lesson. I love the post office line. I love the view from you!
