We’re a bit lucky this week, because Naomi has sent us her hello. I love this hello, not only because it’s beautiful, but because of the story about the rain-umbrella-no-lady! That is TOTALLY something that would happen to me!  I am so sorry it happened to YOU, Naomi! Gah!

I think it can be hard to process kindness, sometimes. I think maybe some people see it as pity? Or perhaps think it’s a bit patronising? Or don’t want to be indebted? Or something? I don’t know…

I wonder if that kind of thing has happened to you, reader person who is reading this right now?

Naomi, of course, handled it with aplomb and much Maltesers. If that were me I would not be so poised about the whole thing. I have this habit of blushing the deepest shade of purple whilst backing away and smiling and saying apologetic things, in circumstances of rejected kindness. I might even wait until I am alone and burst into tears. So lame. I need to work on that. Maybe Maltesers are an important part of the solution? I hadn’t heard about that before…

It’s about to pour with rain here now, so I can totally put myself in this letter’s rainy-night shoes… It’s threatening and cloudy and I can hear beery men out on the streets singing some lout-y songs. Ugh. I won’t be offering them an umbrella, I can tell you.  I also won’t tell you how genius-y and beautiful the little snail mail zine Naomi made is… she might shoo me away and I’ll do that purple-face-back-away-thing. That would be really awkward….

*runs to buy pre-emptive Maltesers*

Beautiful snail mail from Naomi. She is the envelope art queen. And that letter is perfect – what a wonderful story. That’s what snail mail is all about – connecting with someone via a beautiful package containing lovely things to spread some happiness. And how clever is that little zine. I love Naomi!

Oh Pip! (And CJ, and Sarah, and Isabel)! You have all made me feel MUCH better about being rejected by the no-umbrella lady. It was rather embarrassing at the time, and I did totally overplay my nonchalance at her rejection. (“Are you sure? Oh sure, no problem… I just thought… Ok… have a great night…” etc. Awkward! With a backdrop of crashing thunder and lightening.) And then I stumbled back through the rain to my front door, carrying BOTH umbrellas, and feeling completely silly. Thankfully I had a husband waiting who had a) agreed that it was something we should offer, and b) made me laugh at myself and not take it too much to heart when I was knocked back.

    xo

ps. And c) giant Malteesers. From Darrell Lea. They were really good!

I really love this whole snail mail thing. I first came across it when I came across Naomi’s blog and I was very fortunate to receive one of her beautiful hand drawn envelopes when I subscribed to her blog. I love the letter, a snippet in time, so well told. We could imagine ourselves there, with Naomi, the rain and the stranger over the road. What a great initiative Pip. I just love it. Love Sarah xx

Wow, what I wouldn’t give for someone like Naomi to run out of her house and give me an umbrella – I can’t believe you were turned down, Naomi! I am so often stuck in the rain without an umbrella, looking longingly at the person next to me who is nice and dry under theirs. It was sweet of you to do that – and your zine is super cool. xx Isabel

What beautiful writing she has, and how lovely to receive her letter. It’s always wonderful when a proper letter drops onto the doormat isn’t it. CJ xx
