Nice Life Reminders Pip-Life something GOOD for the weekend

Episode Five: Something good for the weekend

January 18, 2020

This morning I got up super early and went to the market. So early in fact that the aisles were still full of empty fruit boxes and runaway grapes and squished apricots. No matter because I’m amazingly nimble with my trolley and I dodged all the obstacles like Sonic the Hedgehog and came home with a trolley loaded with the nicest tomatoes, fresh herbs, cucumbers, Turkish bread, sliced leg ham, cheese, sourdough, avocados and more.

Talk about good things for the weekend ..! Let’s continue in the same vein.

Something GOOD For the Weekend

Something GOOD to do

Tap into the Slow Flower Trail. What could be more lovely than that?

Something GOOD to watch

Last night I watched the Paul Kelly documentary on Stan. I am sure it’s been on there for ages, but I am notoriously late to the party on many things. The doco is really, really good.

Even if you are not a Paul Kelly fan it’s a brilliant trip back and forth from late ’70s and early ’80s Australian music, right up to the present. There’s lots in it about fragility, song writing and artistry … but it’s also impossible not to sing along and admire (the super sporty, super wordy) Kelly’s commitment to becoming brilliant.

Next on my watch list is another not new film – The Farewell.

And changing tack … how CUTE is this concept? Online dance classes by Groove Therapy!

Something GOOD to know

In my creative writing course, we have been learning more about villanelles. I only knew about the  wild-eyed Villanelle in Killing Eve, but it turns out that a villanelle can also describe a poetic form. I thought that if you didn’t already know that, you might like to know it. You’re welcome.

Something GOOD to buy?

A satin robe covered in blue tigers? Yes, please.

Something GOOD to read

I just read The Weekend by Charlotte Wood, which I loved. Then I read The Natural Way of Things by Charlotte Wood, which was really different to The Weekend – heartbreaking and raw and confronting – but also excellent. What a great writer CW is!

This book is next on my list (aka on reserve at the library!) after Favel Parrett’s There Was Still Love.

Also? Train your brain to be kinder.

And? If you want to live a simpler life, identify your needs by Rhonda Hetzel of Down to Earth.

Plus? Why tweens are giving scrunchies to their crushes.

Something GOOD to cook

French bread pizza? I mean COME ON. This looks so delicious!

PLUS – Chickpea Stew With Orzo and Mustard Greens

AND – Seedy Power Sprinkle

Something/s GOOD to listen to

I’m listening to Fake Heiress, the BBC’s creative non-fiction podcast about famous flimflammer, Anna Delvey. Possibly you read about Anna last year? Well this podcast dramatises some of her story and informs on other parts. It’s a bit of a hybrid style, but I’m liking it so far.

And here is another story about a faker in case you’re as fascinated by the anti-authentic as I am.

Something/s GOOD to make

How about making a quilt for your pet? I am getting started on one this weekend for the winner of my Authors For Fireys auction. Of course, you don’t need to give this to your pet once you have made it. You could also give it to a baby you like … or make it twice the size and give it to yourself to pop over your legs when you’re watching telly.

And here is a poem.

Because poems are GOOD too. This week it’s a link, because COPYRIGHT. I think you should read Jan Owen’s First Love. It’s inspired by the painting below. Perhaps you too have a handsome gloved boyfriend who is four hundred and forty-five?

Also?

Here is another longer peek at my book, if you fancy it. Sorry about the lack of chatter in it, but I was kind of speechless as it was my first look at an advance copy! It’s always kind of surreal when you finally hold your own book in your hands. You will, however, hear some page turning sounds, the drone of the radio and some birds twittering.

Have a lovely weekend, peaches! Eat all the good things and read something ace and generally gad about and have a fun time, if poss.

x Pip

I really enjoy Charlotte’s books also, I found an older book of hers in a op shop a few years ago called Love & Hunger which is a great read, its about food, family and life. I think you might like it. Happy Reading

You will love Favel’s book. It was one of those books that when I finished I thought “that was ok” but as the weeks went by I couldn’t stop thinking of it. Itcreally sticks with you. Don’t you just love those kind of books ?!

I loved the weekend and I think I will read The Natural Way of Things as well. Loving CW books. Have you listened to her podcast? I just finished listening to the second episode last night. There Was Still Love is also an awesome book, my fave from last year. Great post, love looking at your recommendations.
